This year, I didn’t make a New Year’s resolution.
I chose a word.
I was encouraged to do this by the incredible group of women who attended the Women’s Retreat hosted by Honest Talk – a space that invites truth, clarity, and intentional growth. Instead of setting resolutions that often focus on doing more, I chose a word that would sharpen how I move.
That word is discernment.
Discernment in my personal life.
Discernment in my professional life.
Discernment in everything in between.
Let me be clear: this is not about slowing down.
This is about moving forward with precision.
I am ambitious. I want growth. I want expansion. I want to step into bigger opportunities – and I understand that reaching higher levels requires clearer judgment. Discernment allows me to channel my energy toward what actually moves the needle, rather than scattering it across every possibility that comes my way.
Being discerning doesn’t mean I’m saying “no” more often because I’m cautious. It means I’m saying “no” with intention, so the right “yes” has room to land. It means recognizing that not every opportunity deserves my time, even if it’s good, exciting, or flattering. I’m learning that focus is not the enemy of ambition – it’s the engine behind it.
Discernment is becoming my gatekeeper. Before an immediate yes, there is alignment. Before action, there is clarity. This isn’t hesitation; it’s strategy. It’s trusting my judgment enough to choose opportunities that stretch me, challenge me, and move me closer to my goals.
This year is about leaning into what matters most, protecting my momentum, and creating space for the kind of opportunities that require readiness, confidence, and vision. Discernment isn’t shrinking my world – it’s refining it.
No resolution.
Just a word.
And a commitment to move boldly, intentionally, and with purpose.
