Excitement continues to build around Canada’s first WNBA team – and the Toronto Tempo is keeping the momentum going.

As the team gears up for its 2026 debut, it’s also growing its ownership group with some high-profile names joining the fold.

On Tuesday, the Tempo announced Canadian actress, comedian and writer Lily Singh would be joining the leadership team as both owner and Chief Hype Officer.

Singh, who rose to fame on YouTube before breaking into mainstream TV and publishing, is no stranger to the sports world. In 2020, she was part of the trailblazing ownership group that brought professional women’s soccer to Los Angeles with Angel City FC.

“I know from experience that in every corner of the world, one thing always rings true: the positive impact that participating in sports and the sports community has on girls and women,” Singh said in a press release. “I love women. I love Toronto. Joining the ownership group of the Tempo is an absolute no-brainer – I can’t think of anything else I would rather spend my money, time and hype-woman energy on.”

As Chief Hype Officer, Singh will be responsible for “building and amplifying excitement for the Tempo on and off the court,” which includes energizing fans, creating in-game rituals and building momentum around the women’s team.

“Lilly is a creative visionary with infectious energy and enthusiasm,” says Teresa Resch, President, Tempo Basketball Club. “She’s been one of the earliest and most vocal supporters of this team, and we’re thrilled to have her as part of our ownership group.”

Tapping into the tech world

At the end of April, the team also announced Sukhinder Singh Cassidy would be joining founding owner Larry Tanenbaum and tennis star Serena Williams as part owner of the team.

An Ontario native, Singh Cassidy is a top Canadian tech executive and entrepreneur with over 25 years of experience. She is the current CEO of accounting platform Xero and has previously held senior roles at StubHub, Google, and Amazon. She’s also the founder of theBoardlist, an organization that promotes diverse leadership on corporate boards.

“The opportunity to be part of this absolutely powerhouse ownership group is, in many ways, the culmination of both my personal passions and my professional experiences,” said Singh Cassidy.

“I am a proud Canadian, a passionate sports fan, and a champion for creating opportunities for women to thrive. I believe there’s never been a better time to invest in women’s sports, and there’s no better team to invest in than the Toronto Tempo.”
